    Job Overview and Purpose The Traffic Officer will present the public face of the Agency and individual Officers will, in their dealings with the public, be able to influence the Highways Agency's reputation and the positive or negative way in which people perceive the Agency. One of the positive manifestations of this job being carried out well is improved response to incidents on the Traffic Officer's section of the network and positive liaison with other road users. This will result in improved road safety and driver confidence, increased journey time reliability and reduced incident relation congestion. This is a 24/7 service operating 365 days per year. This role is classed as a safety critical role due to the nature of the working environment on the motorway network and dealing with road users.

    Key Responsibilities To provide the on-road resource to support the development of the Highways Agency's Network Operator Role.

    To reduce incident related congestion by:
    Managing collisions.
    Removing damaged/broken down and abandoned vehicles.
    Clearing debris/ animals on carriageway.

    To improve road safety for all road users by:
    Undertaking high visibility patrols.
    Providing mobile/temporary road closures.
    Escorting or accompanying high risk, abnormal and other vehicles.

    To improve journey time reliability by:
    Monitoring infrastructure and road works.

    To improve customer relations by:
    Supporting special events.

    Other duties:
    Supporting crime management - working under Police direction and informing Police of road traffic offences and support enforcement.
    Attending legal proceedings - give evidence as a witness.
    Providing limited first aid when first on scene at an accident.

    Essential Qualifications or Experience required to do the job 1 years' experience in an operational customer focused role OR

    6 months' experience in an operational customer focused role AND

    A minimum of 5 'O' Levels/GCSE's at grade C and above (or equivalent) AND

    Have held a valid UK driving licence for at least 2 years with a maximum of 3 points on your licence (at the time of sending in your application).

    You must live within one hour's commutable distance from the location you are applying for, or be prepared to relocate to within one hour's distance at your own expense.

    These posts have been designated as safety critical roles. As well as demonstrating the required competencies, you will need to undergo CRB, or security clearance checks and medical assessments.

    Candidates who are successful at Assessment Centre but do not get one of the positions available will have the option of being placed on a waiting list for up to 12 months to be offered a position as and when they arise.
