Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Thought I'd try here before going onto Rum Ration.

Going through family history have found a Reginald James Cook, PLY/18460 (Dev), who served with RMLI.

He died of disease onboard HMS Challenger 11 Mar 1917 and is listed as buried at sea.

The ship was listed as being in Simonstown over that period. How come he wasn't buried in Simonstown? There is no listing of his death in the log, but it does show 2 on the sick list the day before and only one the day after. Is it fair to assume the one not there the next day is him?

Also, any help in tracking down his service record, or any other record, would be gratefully appreciated. Having a bit of a mare with Ancestry/NA.

    Many thanks
