Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I was wondering if anyone on this forum could point me in the right direction to solve this problem. My Grandfather served in the RFC, which I understand was a part of the Army before 1918. I know his service number and what rank he achieved, but he was mentioned in despatches. I think he was somewhere near Gallipoli but what he did I don't know. I have tried the public record office but no joy. I would really like to know what he did. Can anyone help?

  2. If your grandfather served in the RFC, the chances are that he enlisted into an Army regiment initially. You may find some information in the archives of the relevant Regimental Museum, National Army Museum or the RAF Museum.

A Mention in Despatches is usually recorded in the London Gazette - this is searchable on the web:

    or:

Other contributors will hopefully provide links to other archives.

  3. Hi
If your G/F was at Gallipoli he would have been awarded the 1915 Star, this will then be on a medal index card at the National Archives. If you go to there online site www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline. the MIC are searchable, you will have to put in his name & if you know it his Army number.
