My laptop, out of warranty expired the other night.
It got very hot and then died, its a Dell but is completely sealed unit with no obvious places to open it up.
So how is the best way to "open" it to get the SSD out to put in a caddy to get the data off it.

It has been suggest a bayonet might do the trick or coal chisel?

Take it to a place that repairs laptops. If you don't you're going to knack the thing completely.

Don't use a coal chisel, that could get hot, may even lignite under certain circumstances...

If there is no screws on the back, then you get into it, by removing the keyboard,
lever out from the top edge of the keyboard, lift it off gently, and disconnect the ribbon,
remove keyboard, and you're in.

Model number would be good. If you know that there's probably a video on Youtube that will show you how to get into it.

There's a half decent chance that not knowing how to get into it in the first place is an indication of the level of IT skills our erstwhile @Taunton might have or not have. That being the case, even if he does get into it, will he know how to do whatever is required without making things worse?

No insult intended to @Taunton but if the data is that important and your level of IT black magic is a bit lacking (like most of us on here I'd warrant, self included), I'd hand it to someone who knows what they are doing.

It's not always obvious how to crack laptops open (screws are hidden under rubber feet, there are screws in places where you wouldn't expect them etc) but once you're inside removing an SSD is one of the easier things to do.

Other half took it to her work (before I could break in to it & ask Arrse how to) & the IT bod opened it up.
SSD out now, seems the CPU melted on the motherboard.
Have data off SSD now.

Her work IT tech felt sorry for me and donated an old (read that as 2 years old) laptop.
And ghosted over all files etc to it.

My laptop is a combination of some screws on the bottom plus the rest under the keyboard.

The keyboard edge needs to be popped up with something sharp, then remove a ribbon cable attaching the keyboard to the laptop and then undo the rest of the screws.
