A bit of further detailing on the pod, noticed that most of the fastners had the paint warn away or the fastners were just bare metal.
They were very prominent from the photo's that I have found so I had a crack at getting looking right.

Applied Vallejo Natural Steel with... dare I say it, a toothpick sharpened up

Messed about with the burner can, highlighting with some Mig amo Bluish Titanium. Not applied with a toothpick !

Yet another outstanding example of modelling.

Some bits done and I've roughed out the RWR for the tail of the aircraft, these still need blending in and contouring up a bit more.

You can see that I've been blending in the resin tail extension a bit more and totally obliterated the panel lines, next will a job with a scriber I think?

Also painted up the rear of the cockpit area so I can fix the rear canopy at some point.
A tad of overspray but noting too serious but a bit more detail painting and hghlighting yet.

Slow progress.

Looking good. Love the metallic finish on the engine thingy at the back*.

* I know about tanks and things with turrets - not so much about aircraft... :)

Cheers Chap :-D

Scab plate time, the wonderful world of F-16 block numbers. Feck me its confusing !
Some have them and some don't so who knows.

So I dropped a BLX with the ECM pod , wrong version so I have been told so
for the sake of a few quid I bought the correct one.

A guy from another forum sent me the correct gun parts for a later version.

The RAM plates on the nose were not looking great from the Cross Delta set, my doing as I creased one of them so I ripped them off and made new plastic ones.
They will get fettled in better.

The rest of the scab plates fitted on the spine.

Quick test fit of the canopy, now I think i read that the European MLU F-16 fleet are doing away with the yellow tinted canopies and going back to clear?
Is this correct - I have seen a few pictures with Vipers showing a clear front canopy with the yellow tinted rear?
Canopy needs polishing up yet, its full of scratches at this point in time.

So a long list of things to do yet before primer,
Sand - Scribe- Rivet - not in that order
:frantic:

Enjoy

The yellow tint is actually a gold film designed to reduce the radar cross-section by shielding the pilot from radar beams.

Where did you read that clear canopies are replacing the filmed ones, please?

It was on a website for some flight sim :-

Something to do with NVG / new helmet with cueing capability (JHMCS) compatibility I seem to remember, seen quite a few pictures showing only the front canopy being replaced as the rears were not yet a priority. photo below

Have you got decals for J-225? That one nearly wrote-off three Gazelles, two FFR Land Rovers and a Bedford MK bowser after sucking-up a duck over SLTA in '83.

J-225 aptly crashed in 1983 in Soltau training area whilst on a low level exercise. Just found the info on a Dutch website. Possibly the cloggies got the training area wrong?

Most of 313's aircraft were Block 15s and then there are subdivisions in that mix as well. When they received their mid life crisis upgrade they were upped to Block 20 MLUs. Do you have the S/N or build number of the one you're looking to build?

The gold tinted canopies were intended to reduce the radar XC of the bird as well as offer radiation protection similar to the Prowler EA-6B. Thecoating was on the inside and complete bugger to keep clean. Only water was allowed. It was also fragile; catching your watch on it did not make for happy crew chief. When HaveGlass came along a new coating was introduced as one of the many changes in the program. It has a greyer tint rather than the gold. That's why you see some with a gold tinted rear section. It only gets changed out when it's up for replacement.

That’s brilliant mate, I’m not firm yet on the decals for my build so it pretty much fluid at the moment but 313 Sqn fits the timeframe albeit mine will be much later in it’s service life.

My understanding is that the MLU upgrade brought the early block numbers up to and beyond the block 40 standard - NVG cockpit, smart weapon compatibility, heavyweight landing gear and targeting pod integration. Noticed that the Dutch vipers are now carrying the AIM-9X winders along with the newer JHMCS helmets Along with the Sniper pod.

Great info on the canopy, I knew that it reduced the RCS but not the fragility of the coating being one of the reasons for changing out.

Had a chance today to read through the thread. The hole next to the arrestor hook is a fuel tank vent valve for the aft tank. The fuel gets pumped around to maintain CoG. There's also a tank inerting system which pumps inert gas into the tanks, the air goes out the vent holes. There's no fuel dump on a viper. Need to loose a few thousand pounds of fuel, just ease the throttle forward, job done.

Generally there aren't lines of rivets behind the airco outlet (behind the seat). Round about the outlet there are a few reinforcement plates and a couple of lines of rivets directly behind the outlet but after that it's bare. No matter with the black paint they're probably not visible. Apologies for being a rivet counter. Looking forward to seeing this develop. Loved the blue metallic colour on the doughnut. Need to get me some of that.

Cheers chaps for all the likes and comments, keep em coming!

So ihave started cleaning up the AN/ALQ131 pod (again) but this time the right version. Pylon has been modified and sway braces added. ELGTR round is above the 131 pod. Lovely bit of 3D printing
