Harry Patch

The French gave all our surviving Great War veterans the Legion d'Honneur a few years ago. Now Belgium honours Harry Patch.

Am I the only one who thinks that our own glorious and forces-hating government should show some similar appreciation, seeing that large numbers of non-entities and time servers have been rewarded with knighthoods and peerages for no better reason than that of being someone's chum?
I read his book whilst on holiday, 'The Last Fighting Tommy', currently £6 in Tesco. Very interesting and humerous account of his life, quite-a-card as some would say.

Well worth reading, and I think that the proceeds go to charity.
If the likes of Beckham and Rooney are in the frame for various awards, or Kelly Holmes or anyone of the others who have been awarded various badges of honour, then Harry Patch should be in there too.

Failing that I am sure he would be stood many pints in any Mess he visited or NAAFI bar. Trinkets and baubels are for those who fee insecure.
