Apparently it's not that easy to strip them of their royal titles.

Professor Thomas Poole, who specialises in UK constitutional and administrative law at London School of Economics, says that even if the Queen wanted to remove the couple’s titles, it would be difficult. “The monarch is not the guardian of the constitution,” he says “and all major decisions are routed through Parliament. This is true even of the many of the key elements relating to royalty. The Queen cannot remove titles of peerage; that can only be done by statute, passed by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and receiving royal assent, which means the agreement of the Queen. As you can probably guess, this is an extremely uncommon event.” Professor Poole says that it would be an “interesting scenario” if, say, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could be persuaded to renounce their titles. However, he says it would be unlikely and that even that decision would be subject to parliament.

As if Megraine would ever give up her title unless being slowly dipped into an acid bath.

There is no historical precedent for a situation exactly like the current one, but the closest is the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936. “That’s a good illustration of the power dynamics at play,” Professor Poole says. “At all points, government and parliament were in control of the situation. It was the politicians who decided that Edward could have either the crown or Mrs Simpson, but not both.” The decision to abdicate was given legal effect by statute: His Majesty’s Declaration of Abdication Act 1936. The statue also adjusted the line of succession to exclude any offspring Edward and Mrs Simpson might have had.

However HMQ or Charles could make the suggestion that this be so to the government of the day.

To get political and parliamentary buy-in to take action on Harry and Meghan’s titles, the Queen would need something close to unanimity among the politicians and the public,” Professor Poole says. He doubts that would happen, and so it is “very unlikely that decision-makers, including the Queen and her advisers, would consider going down this route”.

This might be closer than the author thinks.

The situation is different when it comes to divorce; Diana lost the style HRH and instead was styled Diana, Princess of Wales. Following her divorce from the Duke of York, Sarah Ferguson was allowed to keep her Duchess of York title as was the custom but she also continued to use the style Her Royal Highness. Within a few months a letters patent regulating post-divorce royal titles was issued, which meant that if a woman divorced any of Queen Elizabeth II’s sons, or grandsons, they may not continue to hold the title of Royal Highness. Fergie could not use HRH any more since she was no longer married to Andrew, but was able to continue as Duchess.

So if Harry finally gets sick of her it wouldn't matter she could still be a duchess

Constitutional rules aside, would having no royal titles help or hinder Meghan and Harry in their new LA life? Reputation management specialist Nick Davies from Reputation Ace says that if the couple were his clients, he wouldn’t be worried about their titles being taken away. “Harry and Meghan are so well known and such in demand public figures that I feel not having a title wouldn’t impact their future success or income potential.” The couple were not paid for the interview with Oprah, but since moving to the US they have made deals with streaming services Netflix and Spotify, reported to be worth millions.

Simon Wadsworth, co-founder of reputation management company Igniyte, agrees: “I don’t see their royal titles as massively important… because they clearly have well-known public personas, and the more negative UK press they receive, I can only see that generating more sympathy from their targeted audience in the US.”

So they have achieved their aim in income potential. Though not in being adored royal personages.

While removing their titles would perhaps make little difference to Harry and Meghan’s reputation, it might well harm the reputation of the Royal Family. “Harry has been a key part of the Royal Family for his entire life,” Davies says, “and one would think it is fair for him and Meghan to keep a ceremonial title, particularly due to his long history of service for the country and his charity work. It’s a brand new road for the royals to tread, so it will be tricky to an extent. While officially they are a separate entity, they are still family and that needs to be made clear.”

Harry and Meghan may not be working members of the Royal Family, and depending on who you ask they’re inspirational modernisers of the monarchy, or attention-grabbing traitors. Yet in the public consciousness, the couple will for a long time be associated with the monarchy titles or no titles. As Seward says: “Harry is a prince of the blood, and he will always be a prince.”

That's moot, if one betrays trust then is one deserving of keeping the benefits? I would say not personally and most on here would agree from posting history.

So they have established themselves as personalities, probably assured income potential for the near future, though unless they invest this will likely drop off sharply. But she still wants the trappings of royalty, viz the NY visit. Here I see an achilles heel, if she goes too far too often she will simply be a figure of ridicule and how much can Harry take?

I noticed that she hadn't signed the letter, the signature was typed or printed. One wonders if she just told a staffer to "send a letter saying how bad it was for ME!"

It was also sent from 'The Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex' as if it was a royal missive, not from someone who has withdrawn from the RF.

It is not just narcissim. It is Dark Triad. From an intersting article I will link in here later, you can be a Narcissist and Machiavellian and vice versa and contribute positively to society if this is understood about you and you are placed in the right role . But once you introduce psychopathy to the mix, that is another other deal.

I would not be surprised if in addition to being ignored by the palace, having their trial balloons and incorrect press statements refuted that the pair have been apprised of information and proofs currently held. Hence the Squad being told to back off for 24 hours during Earthshot. Bearing in mind the courtcase now has a different skew in the light of their subsequent use of media and previous refusal toproduce full supporting documentation, the bullying investigations and Hollywood plus New York cold shouldering / the change of perception in American media

I am NOT a psychologist - albeit non-academically interested in human interactions - but while there are many articles and studies on Dark Triad personality traits and signs, the original article I read was an interesting read and explains enough and I will edit it in if I find it again. Otherwise it was posted here many, many pages ago

So an overt declaration of intent. She wants to be in politics so she (her PR team) carefully chooses a non- controversial topic that will likely gain support from women, even those who don't like her.
Then she writes to leading Democrats to throw her hat in the ring by supporting a piece of legislation that is socially proactive and makes well sure the media know.
Typically however the letter is more about her than other mothers and full of, if not untruths, certainly embellishments.
Was her family poor? Not really. Did she have to work for pocket money? Well lots of us have done that to learn the value of money rather than have parents shell out.
Shows what type of politician she would be, shallow, superficial and forked-tongued.

I also note that the rich will be taxed to pay for the measure. I wonder how much she'll be avoiding paying towards it.
I have just read an article in The Daily Express that a 'source' has suggested the Maggot is about to receive an invitation from Nancy Pelosi to address congress. What would be her chosen subject one wonders?

Pre-meltdown fantasy look-at-me trial balloon. If real, it will be well interesting to read the US press reaction.

People, eh? I start to understand the terrible draw of Corrie El Dorado

I would have thought it was a rare privilege and an honour to address Congress - just like the Houses of Parliament and limited to very few individuals of real stature.
In all seriousness, other than bagging a Prince, what has this two bit actress achieved in her life that could possibly merit her being given this rare honour?
Hopefully it is just more bullshit from their well below average PR team.

Me and climate change?
Me and maternity leave?
Me and green investing?
Me and 40 minutes?
Me and ANGLO-American relations?

Or perhaps she'll read them The Bench. That'd be cool.
