The thing is that, while what she's up to may be offensive to us Brits because of our view of the monarchy and what it means in this country, to the yanks it's all part and parcel of the normal celebrity churn and, for Megain, it's the equivalent of her big break into movies, which is how she's treating it.
It's sad to see one of our most loved institutions placed on a par with Star Wars, but she's an American so it's there to be used like any other role and of little significance once it's served its purpose, which is why it was so easy to walk out on. She has no emotional reason to respect it or to treat it as anything other than a career opportunity.
I suspect that her plan is actually working remarkably well and that her life is largely untroubled by what the British press and British public think of her, which is not a lot.
Once she found she was in a foreign situation where she wasn't getting rave reviews she took it back to her home ground where she understands the rules better than in the UK. So she doesn't really care what the Brits think about her as she has no intention of ever going back. Yet having the UK Press on her back is to her advantage as she can play the poor, wronged, little yankee girl.
Star Wars is actually an apt comparison, it started as a new innovative spectacle and simply became boring as each film instead of bringing in something new tried to have bigger and better battles and special effects.
Meggie needs the battles for her image and to keep her face in the news now her assault on Hollywood didn't even get off the beaches. But they need to get bigger and better otherwise it won't grab people's attentions.
The danger for her is that just like the Star Wars film they become ultimately boring and sterile. So obviously she will have to change tactics and a juicy divorce battle with kids in the middle would seem to fit the bill.
The danger for the RF is that they get dragged into a escalating mud-slinging match that smears their reputation and standing. This they have to avoid at all costs. Show her up to be a bully by all means to undermine her claims and then studiously stand back and aloof.
As that NYT article showed America can easily get bored with constant whining. She will always have fans just as Di did who want to believe in the fairy tale and because it didn't happen they don't blame the princess they blame the big bad ogre of the RF. Facts don't come into it. But hopefully most Septics will soon get tired of this and go into turn off mode.
