thinking of getting Harpoon for the pc...but as even the download on it's own runs to £40, just wondered if any players here would be able to tell me if I was missing anything particularly between that and the Fleet Command game brought out by Jane's a few years back?

  2. Fleet Command, is a fair stab at a Naval wargame, though its a Mini Metro Compared to Harpoons Vintage Rolls Royce.
Pays yer money etc etc but if your a Rivet counter go for Harpoon. That said I had a lot of fun with FC and there's a pretty healthy set of don't get out enough modders that have updated Databases etc. that and FC is gonna cost you tuppence ! Dangerous Waters was a more simulation based game with a similar take, you got to use the various weapons more directly from Destroyers Subs and MPA.

Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations : Warfare Sims

    This looks promising

  3. I had fleet command and enjoyed it a lot, more so than harpoon, but in fairness I only played the original version, which while good was very dated when I got my hands on it. I would love a blast on the up to date version but cant find it lying around anywhere in internetshire

  5. I've got a copy somewhere of FC, but it doesn't like Windows versions after XP at all.
    Unless it's just me.

    What alternatives are out there?
Not really into 'games' would rather get proper simulator type software.

there is a patch/installer for FC and vista - I used it to get my install up and running. should be fairly easy to google.

The problem i had with FC is that after an intense dozen minutes or so at the beginning of each scenario, you find that you have wiped out the majority of the enemy offensive capability, so you then find yourself with a few hours of tedium hile your battle group reaches a position it can complete the objective. There would still be subs around but unless you were lucky, you wouldnt detect them first as your asw assets wouldnt search properly and the first warning you get is when you detect an incoming torpedo/cruise missile!
Harpoon allows you to set your formation to cover the various threats. However, it is daunting to the new beginner!

  8. There is a game out called Naval War Arctic Circle which is similar to Harpoon and FC. It isn't the most polished game but can while away a few hours if you find a copy lying arount KaT or TPB
    Naval War Arctic Circle

  9. Someone seriously needs to make a WW2 destroyer vs u-boat game, there's the silent hunter series but that's always from the u-boat perspective.

  10. I wouldnt bother. Could have been great but its like the developers just gave up on it and released it half finished.

  11. Im sure there is a multi player mode in one of the later ones that pit one player as a destroyer escort group commander vs the uboat.
