HAPPY 235th BIRTHDAY TO THE US MARINES

#1
Today we celebrate around the world the 235th birthday of our beloved Corps.

This is a message from our Commandant in 1921 traditionally read at every celebration wherever it takes place around the world to remind us of our heritage:

On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress. Since that date, many thousand men have borne the name Marine. In memory of them, it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the Birthday of our Corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.

The record of our Corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world's history. During 90 of the 146 years of it's existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the nations foes. From the battle of Trenton to the Argonne. Marines have won foremost honors in war, and in the long eras of tranquility at home. Generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres and in every corner of the seven seas that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security.

In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our Corps Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term Marine has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.

This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who preceded us in the Corps. With it we also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our Corps from generation to generation and has been the distinguishing mark of the Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the men of our nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as "Soldiers of the Sea" since the founding of the Corps.

Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune, USMC Commandant

From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli,
We fight our country's battles in the air, on land and sea.
First to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.

Our Flag's unfurled to every breeze from dawn to setting sun.
We have fought in every clime and place, where we could take a gun.
In the snow of far off northern lands and in sunny tropic scenes, You will find us always on the job, the United States Marines.

Here's health to you and to our Corps, which we are proud to serve.
In many a strife we've fought for life and never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy ever look on heaven's scenes,
they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines.

Happy birthday Uncle Sam's Misguided Children ;-)!

JJH - to you and all who serve with the USMC (whichever meaning you put on it) - a truly happy birthday, the very best of luck and keep on doing what you tend to do pretty damn well. How's the boy doing by the way? Semper Fi!

I went out to buy a card that said 'Happy 235th Birthday' but had no luck, they must be out of stock.
Happy Birthday to all past and present members of the USMC.

Best wishes to all members of the Corps, serving and retired. You add dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl if left to the Army of the USA! Many fond memories of Marine League and evenings spent swinging the lantern with USMC guys and girls. They may be septics but they can drink like Brits!

Funny how it is always soldiers' sons who are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan and not politicians' sons. Truly semper fidelis.

Cuddles i think you have stated a very valid point. Is there any politician in the uk or us that has a son or daughter at risk.
There have been a few from the side of the pond JJH and I come from. I know Senator McCain has a son who served as a Marine in iraq, one who is a USN pilot and a son who graduated last year from USNA and not sure if he deployed yet. V.P. Joe Biden son, Beau, is or was an officer in the National Guard and served in Iraq. A know the son of a US Army 4* just returned from deployment as a SGT with a reserve infantry unit.

That was off thread but my sympathy to the Kelly family and happy Birthday to the Marines

Jim Webb, Senator for VA has a son who has served in combat with the USMC. I know there have been several UK officers who have had sons killed, wounded or otherwise in harms way in recent years.

Sorry to distract the birthday thread. I know of several sons of serving and recently retired senior officers who have been to AFG/IQ. However I do not know of a single UK politician's offspring. Which is a bit strange given the way in which we drifted (hurtled?) into this war.

I can think of only one senior British public figure who has allowed his child to take similar risks as the regular peoples sons & daughters- Prince Charles...
