Hair drug testing at medical?

Hi chaps, a mate took MDMA (once) and smoked weed (three times) over the summer, before submitting his regular officer application. He's got his medical in a couple of weeks and is a bit worried about drug testing there. Is there any chance they might do a hair drug test on him? The period between the drug taking and the test would be a couple of months, so a urine test would come up negative, but there's a good chance a hair test would come up positive.

He's a very good bloke and not a smackhead (this summer was his first time taking drugs, isn't going to do it again). He just wants to know if he needs to shave his head and invest in a back sack and crack to pass the damn thing.

Cheers

What would prompt the medics to take what is effectively a forensic sample?

Would it be your mate's behaviour, demeanour or the drug paraphernalia that he was carrying? Perhaps you could ask him?

Oh dear. Some people seem to have not bothered checking which part of the forum this question was asked in.

For the OP - no, they won't do a hair test. Your friend's activities prior to joining are in the past. He just needs to understand the commitment he plans to make, and that drugs can't form part of his future whilst serving.

For the rest of the muppets - see? That wasn't so difficult now, was it?

Thanks both, passed on the message. He's heard about random lockdowns on base so hair tests can be carried out on all personnel – take it that's only for serving members and not during selection/training?

So what's the urine test for? Drugs or protein/blood sugar/white blood cell count etc.?

Cheers

I have only ever experienced "lockdown" for compulsory drugs testing (CDT) by urine analysis. Only following a positive result would there be any chance of hair testing to establish whether "I must have been spiked last night, honest, never taken drugs in my life" is in any way close to the truth.

You would have to speak to a medic about what else might be tested in a routine medical.
