    Job Overview and Purpose The Highways Agency Regional Control Centres are a hive of activity. Our teams monitor what's happening out on the roads using a CCTV network and make fast decisions when an incident occurs. They deploy roadside and on-road resources, communicate with Traffic Officers and develop effective response plans.

    As a Regional Control Centre Operator, you should be calm under even the greatest pressure, you'll be able to reconsider your decisions as new information emerges, maintain effective communication with teams out on the road - and ensure the right, rapid response to every situation.

    This role is classed as a safety critical role due to the nature of responsibility.


    Key Responsibilities Continuously monitor the operation of the network by obtaining and analysing information from many sources (Traffic Officers, traffic management systems, Police, CCTV, other reports, historic and predicted traffic patterns), including at roadworks, during an incident or adverse weather conditions and during periods of exceptional demand.

    Use this information to decide actions and ensure follow through in terms of:
    - Setting roadside signs
    - Deploying roadside resources such as Traffic Officers and Incident Support Units (ISU's) as well as liaising with Police
    - Deploying other emergency services
    - Providing information to road users, Traffic Control Centres (TCC's) and the media

    Operate and monitor systems including:
    - CCTV
    - Variable Message Sign (VMS), signals and other control methods
    - Tunnel Weather Systems where appropriate
    - Emergency roadside telephones including mobile calls
    - Command and Control Systems
    - Urban Traffic Control
    - GPS vocational referencing of Traffic Officers and Incident
    Support Unit (ISU) fleet
    - Police/HA radio systems

    Operate and provide information for Police systems:
    - Maintain an accurate and timely record of information, decisions and actions
    - Accurately record information for Police enforcement and intelligence purposes
    - Collect information for management monitoring, and provide feedback to all members of the RCC and ISU teams


    Essential Qualifications or Experience required to do the job 1 year's experience in an operational work environment OR

    A minimum of 5 'O'levels/GCSE's at Grade C or above (or equivalent) AND

    Eligibility to remain and take up employment in the UK.

    You must live within one hour's commutable distance from the location you are applying for, or be prepared to re-locate at your own expense.

    Further information We have up to 2 posts available for this location.

    These posts have been designated as safety critical roles. As well as demonstrating the required competencies, you will need to undergo CRB, or security clearance checks and medical assessments.

    Candidates who are successful at Assessment Centre but do not get one of the positions available will have the option of being placed on a waiting list for up to 12 months to be offered a position as and when they arise.
