Gurkhas , myth or reality ?

LE
India already has about 50,000 Gurkhas and has done so since 1947 when the 10 Gurkha regiments of the British Indian Army were split between the British and Indian Armies. I very much doubt they would end up in the PLA.

AIUI individual Gurkhas were given the choice of Indian or British Army. British Gurkha officers were shocked and dismayed that the the Indian Army proved the overwhelmingly popular choice and there was a resulting manpower crisis in the 'British' Gurkha battalions. Hubris at work.

Not quite correct. That only applied to the four Regiments going to the British Army - 2 GR, 6GR, 7GR and 10GR. The soldiers in the six regiments staying in the Indian Army didn't get the option.

Also in 1947 everyone in Indian forces were given the option to stay in India or go to Pakistan - assume no Gurks went to Pakistan.
