  2. Good info there..thanks for that
  3. No probs, I just e-mailed the Gunwharf office and they compiled one in a day or two. Copies can be obtained from the centre office, which is over by the Slug and Lettuce close to the Spinnaker Tower. I don't work there. Gen.
  4. Remember when Gunwharf was ARMY. Happy days.
  5. When was that? All I remember is my pa going there, along with the (now flattened) Pitt Street gym. Used to be for the dockyard, but they built that bloody silly road around it and filled the pools with foam for the gymnastics clubs in there. Back when Pompey was a much bigger Naval town than nowadays! Pompey's ok but there're ****-all jobs for people. Would be a great city with some serious business investment.
  6. Gunwharf was "home" to 20 Maritime Regiment RCT from the late 60's or thereabouts
  7. Who'd join the Army to be in a Maritime Regiment?

It is the same thing as joining the RAF and becoming a Rockape.
  8. Gunwharf Quays aerial.jpg

Before its redevelopment between 1996 and 2001, the main part of the site was HMS Vernon, established ashore in 1923 as the Royal Navy's school of torpedo and anti-submarine warfare, minewarfare and diving. The base was also home to the Second Mine Countermeasures Squadron of minehunters and minesweepers, the Fleet Diving Team and the Portsmouth & Medway Bomb & Mine Disposal Team among other units. For a short period before closing, it was also the HQ of Commandant General Royal Marines. 20 Maritime Regt occupied the finger jetty with two LCTs berthed on it plus the wharf opposite on the left in this aerial photo taken in 1977:

This monument in Vernon Way at Gunwharf Quays commemorates the presence of the RCT Maritime units:

This photo shows some of HMS Vernon's features superimposed on the current Gunwharf Quays development including the Spinnaker Tower. Surviving landmarks include the Infirmary, Vulcan building with the clocktower, the Captain's offices (now called the 'Old Customs House' pub because it housed some Customs & Excise Marine Division offices before the site closed in 1996), the lock-keeper's cottage, the pump house and the crane alongside what was Vernon Creek:

  9. Depends on your point of view. We avoided most of the Army Barmy bs; we wore blues (or overalls) most of the time, with Army beret and insignia (confused the **** out of both squids and Greenies), Laid back service, including 6 month 'holiday' in Belize. So no, not as bad as a Rockape!
  10. That's quality, thank you for posting! I'll print that off for my lads and make sure they get loads of stuff in my size I can buy off them for pennies at the end of the month.
It's a duty of care, you know?
