Guess the Conflict

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Here's a clue - World War II.
Guess the conflict and see if you can name a regiment - or even a battalion.

My estimate - all figured out by the 3rd post.

  2. Greece 1945 - Parachute Regiment skirmishing with communist guerillas in Athens. Other figures are local militias, equipped with a mixture of British, Italian and German equipment....
  3. Err... Sherman tanks and troops from 5th (Scots) Parachute Battalion, 2nd Parachute Brigade, during operations against members of ELAS in Athens, 18 December 1944.

  4. Shermans from 23 Armoured Brigade, 40 or 46RTR most likely.
  5. Nicosia, March 2013. The infamous "Siege of Laiki Bank"

A two day battle between the Cypriot National Guard, British forces and local depositors. The Cypriots re-commissioned an old Sherman from it's military Museum to storm the front of the building. This photo was taken minutes before the 'ATM Massacre'. An incident where 15 local civilians were shot dead by the Security forces for finding a way to withdraw more that €300 in one day.

A very sad time in the history of Cyprus

Having the chap on the left in your team must have been a tad, er, unnerving...
