Greece to recieve 400 M1A1 Abrams tanks from the US......

#1
According to information of the “Hellenic Defence & Technology” magazine, the U.S. authorities approved to grant 400 M1A1 Abrams tanks to the Greek Army, which will include options between simple refurbishment – worth tens of millions dollars for all the tanks- and upgrading to a higher level of operational capability, with a higher corresponding cost. The relative Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) is expected soon.

Also according to exclusive information of the” Hellenic Defence & Technology” magazine, a Price and Availability letter was sent to U.S. authorities regarding 20 AAV7A1 and a low cost upgrade program for them. This is the first step to cover an operational requirement for 75-100 vehicles.

Additional exclusive details on these requirements as well as for Bradley IFVs, in a forthcoming issue of the “Hellenic Defence & Technology” magazine.

Hmmm.. Possibly the Germans will help as they might want the Greek govt to use them to keep their lefty protestors in order ala Syria, thus ensuring the Greeks pay back some of their massive debts!

Ring of steel around their Paliament Building?

Problem is, if they keep cutting the Hellenic Army's pensions the guns might be facing inwards.

So Britain, a rich country, scraps all its tanks so we can have money to spare so we can help bail out the utterly bankrupt Greek economy who are using the money we save by scrapping all our tanks to bail them out to buy themselves 400 gucchi new tanks…

Makes perfect sense!

Why give tanks to the Greeks if they are scared of Turkey?

All that means is that when/if the Turks invade Greece within a couple of days they will be the proud owners of 400 new tanks as the Greeks do what they always do: run away and bum each other and then blame someone else.

How many tanks does Britain have?

As jim points out - how the feck are they going to afford the juice for them? Aren't M1A1s et al legendary for their thirst? Suppose you could try pouring wine in the tanks...

They'll piss themselves at our stupidity, eventually they'll pull out of the Euro and we'll give them more money.

I think this is the yanks helping to keep the balance of power intact. Greece is all ready weakened by its internal problems replacement of obsolete kit is a subtle way of saying behave now children.

Yes, a clever move.

At the very least, Cyprus (the Greek bit, in the Euro) can play M1A1 Abrams against the T-80.

Perhaps the EU/US solution to the Greek problem is to set up another coup by the Greek army? An interim regime of army generals would be able to cut through the gordian knot of economic adjustment issues that socialist politicians are too afraid to tackle - then, when the dirty work has been done, they can step down and allow a return to "democracy". Sounds a great idea; wish it would happen in UK.....
