I know that but he seems to have gone mad since then, but I do love the fact that it was him that outed all the gay Mps and he hates Blair , but he is IMHO very left wing in some of his opinions, as in this case
He may have a point about Diego Garcia though, if the US DoD are using it essentially for free, and we have precious little interest in the place why not get some benefit, whether by means of lease or selling them the place
When the Argentinians installed a Governer the British Ambassador to the then United Provences,( Argentina) was instructed to forward the British claim to the Islands, which he did in 1829, this was promised special attention, but no settement was forthcoming, so a Gunboat was sent only to find that the Spanish had taken over,
Its an idealistic yet naive and ill-thought through article. Points of note include the US use of British territories such as Diego Garcia and Ascension Island, but the author fails to grasp the significance of the FI to the British people, especially to the families of those who died there.
Thank God the author is no longer involved in politics.
The problem I have with the idea is that it totally disregards what the Beniies want. Personally I'd be happy if they were 100% independent, then they can pay HM Armed Forces Ltd for keeping them so from all the oil that will be in their national waters! Prince Edward could be their king, his doing nothing useful for the rest of his life after all.
Does anyone else reckon we will be betraying the Falklands and handing them over to Argentina within the next few years?[/quote]
I doubt that, but it could end up happening to a point. I would not put it past the present govt to get involved in some kind of 'negotiated solution' whereby they end up not really belonging to either nation but each having a stake.
The issue with that (other than the betrayal) is that we will have started to concede, and once you have done that you have effectively admitted that your claim is not entirely rightful.
The only solution is that 'it is not up for discussion and if you attempt to invade you will find cruise missiles landing in BA, if you attempt to blockade you will be sending your sailors to the bottom of the sea'.
Only someone with balls can say that, so dont rest your hopes on gordon brown.
