Slightly off topic but I'm currently watching the HBO series Staircase. Fascinating case and it seems the US system is completely screwed, trial by media, pleas bargains and effectively blackmail to co-erce witness cooperation. Absolutely the best system that money can buy.

If you have the money to pay for a decent lawyer you will likely get away with murder. If you have no money and receive the services of an overworked court appointed public defender you will do time, innocent, or guilty. Public defenders are underpaid and overworked, they will negotiate on your behalf with the district attorney.

Lawyers can earn very good money from the off. The best and brightest get offered jobs at good law firms. Next down the pecking order are the ones who get offered jobs with DA’s offices, they can sharpen themselves up a bit before moving on to private practice. At the bottom of the list of poorly connected, or poor achievers are the public defenders. Some may argue but, it is a generally held opinion.

Say for example you are a poor black man accused of an offence that attracts a ten year sentence. There is a chance you may, with a shite public defender, actually get convicted even if you are innocent. So a deal for two years, out in fifteen months for good behaviour starts to look good.

Innocent men bargaining a deal for a lesser sentence is not uncommon. And the systems is stacked against people with no money. That is why we have legal insurance, and we all carry our lawyers business card in our wallets next to our driving licences.

Watch the Netflix documentary. It’s not as agenda leaning. Spoiler: he blew off that French chick as soon as he got out. She, like others, was used. There was no owl. The injuries only match manual strangulation. He did it.

Unless she has video evidence of someone pumping an underage girl or testimony from that girl, its unlikely that she has any credible evidence of anything.

Not really much for them to go on, Rich person travelled on a nonces plane 20 years ago probably wont result in anything newsworthy.
Its the victims who need to come forward and they will either have been paid off or wont testify through fear.

With regards to the American legal system, it's quite astonishing what they can get away with. In Making A Murderer, the DA is holding a news conference telling everyone that the accused is guilty before, during and after the trial. Evidence is planted (the casings in the bedroom that were on the floor yet the first search never found them) and all sorts of shenanigans that we wouldn't put up with because of sub judice etc.

With The Staircase, I haven't seen the new drama series, but I watched the documentary series on it some time ago. What haunts me is to hear his daughters talking about their dad's innocence with eyes brimming with tears. You can see them wrestling with the facts. The documentary was heavily biased towards his innocence, it was quite a shock to me when he was convicted. Having said that, subsequent reading up and the fact that his first wife died in identical circumstances removed much of the doubt.

Even if he was innocent, he might Alford plea anyway, people will always think he did it, so why not get out of prison early?

I seem to recall that during Maxwell’s trial Epstein’s pilot stated that Trump had also used his plane on occasion.

I don’t say that as ‘whataboutery’, but more at my bemusement that some get the ‘nothing to see here, move along’ treatment, while Hillary particularly gets the ‘she must be a witch, burn her’ approach.

Just seems odd, to me.

There was at one time much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the left leaning conspiraloons about Trump and Epstein and how him using the aircraft proved (insert whatever anti Trump theory you have)

Its died out, possibly because people have sensibly accepted the point that Trump leased / borrowed the aircraft to fly from A to B theres been no evidence presnted he ever visited that island - The Clintons did.

Personally given the anti trump loons are no better than the "Killary" loons, I find it highly unlikely theyve taken such a sensible position and so I suggest it hasnt gained traction for 4 reasons

1) Pointing at Trump using a plane backfires when the response is Bill used the Island

2) The focus shifted to Andy and until the government stops protecting him and convicts him of being a dirty paedo the focus will remain on him. *

3) The types of people who pointed fingers at Trump are the type who called him racist for building a wall (the same one Obama was building and Hillary called for). By the time we got back to the HQ building with the prisoner, crack, and seized firearms a news conference was being set up. Press and TV cameras were already on site, tables set up to display the haul, and the police chief was there waiting for the head of the unit before starting. They tried to drag me into it as a visiting British copper but, I had a subsequent engagement with a coffe machine.

Cases are tried in the media here, no matter how much they argue the toss . They all want to be on telly, or have their picture in the paper. The reason being is that most of the muppets are elected into their positions so they need the PR to hang onto their well paying elected jobs. Sheriffs are directly elected, Police Chiefs are appointed, or fired, by the Mayor, and Mayors are elected. It gets professional at the level of State Police who are less affected by local city (police) and county (sheriff) politics.

As a side note: If I had gathered evidence and presented it into court case the way I have seen police and sheriffs collect it here I would have been rifted. At one location I was assissting with collecting and processing evidence and doing it like we do in the UK. I received a few WTF’s from city detectives who were just dropping evidence into brown paper bags and writing on the side with a felt tip. Their Lt. loudly explained to them that the way I was doing it is best practice and is the way that the DEA and FBI do it.
