DDR had a considerable presence in South Yemen from 68 onwards.
GDR NVA has been disbanded now for 30 years! so that would put even the youngest ex members in their very late 40;s early 50's, a bit past it for this sort of thing unless they were just going to set it up and not lead operationally? But note the first name of one of them - Arend-Adolf G. !!!! Pop or Grand Pop ex SS?

Frankfurter Allgemeine reports them as being either ex-Bundeswehr or ex-Police.
