  1. Hello, just wondering if anyone here could answer a few questions as I am considering this as my first job choice. Firstly how long is the trade training and what are you required to do?

    Secondly once qualified what is the general day to day life like and what tasks are you normally given?

    And finally what kind of things would be useful to gain experience in before I join up?

    Any answered would be greatly appreciated,

  2. I really went out on a limb here, expecting to get nowhere, but I tried this anyway

    And bugger me look what popped up

    So in short you can expect to be up at 04:00 to get breakfast ready, before taking dental sick parade. A quick NAAFI break then down to the kennels to take the WRAC element for a walk before sitting down to lunch. After changing the guard for the tourists, it's off for a sit down to look for enemy positions on the photos taken this morning by the Blue Jobs. A quick turn down the CommCen will leave you feeling a little cramped, so down to Marchwood for a quick swim under the LCLs checking for nasties, then back to the cookhouse for a well deserved chilli con carne made with baked beans and horse - make sure to dash to the deserts, poke one of the cakes and claim loudly "that's mine" before returning to the end of the queue, only to find someone has had your cake away once you get to the puddings. After a quick wash, it's into the white vectra with blue lights to make sure no one is misbehaving down town. Midnight sees you back in your chariot, a happy camper with dreams of doing it all again tomorrow.

    Tomorrow, you'll be greasing a CET and checking lightbulbs
  3. I'm sure you've checked out the site?

    You service, maintain and repair plant machinery, whether that's a JCB or Caterpillar excavator. You're also an expert in workshop practice, and have a sound knowledge of petrol and diesel engines, generators, pumps and transmission systems. You can earn qualifications, opening up job prospects in the Army... and the civilian world

    If you want my bit, I would train as a bricky/plasterer/sparkie or chippy. Trades that are easy to cobble in at weekends (for cash when you leave) where you don't need a workshop.

    My best mate is ex RE bless him, quite a nice bloke everything considered!
  4. Thanks for that extremely useful bit of information, you seem to have assumed that the use of google was beyond my capabilities.

    I have already conducted numerous searches, without finding anything on the length of training. Also I have used this forum so I can get an honest opinion from someone doing the job itself as opposed to a generic overview.
  5. That was more the kind of answer I was looking for, cheers charlie4. I've looked at that page many times and part of it seems to have loaded differently so now answers most of my questions.
  6. Not sure the RE are issued with Vectras with Blue lights?

    You asked what you should try and gain experience in, so how about:

    So, 14 weeks Basic, 9 weeks class three engr (or whatever they call it) then 35 weeks on how to mend stuff. That's how long the training is covered.

    As for things you should be interested or have experience in: Being a fitter seems to be right up there, but driving and mending stuff seem to be key points as well
  8. They tend not to cook breakfast, take sick parade, look after MWD or any of the other myriad things I listed.

  9. My mate is ex brickie and his brother is ex sparkie (both RE). Consider in 3, 6 9 years when your out, any company will snap up an ex squaddie (punctuality/work ethic) qualified tradesman. Then at the weekend you pocket another £200 that the good old HMRC don't know about? Two years down the line start your own business?
    My first trade, prior to joining up (Printer) couldn't do jack cos I needed a print works/press circa £150,000, as per a fitters workshop.

You really are a most fortunate chap that after being given a link (by twodifferent people, despite your Google Fu skills meaning you already had the page), it now tells you what you want to know whereas before the RE General Fitter page presumably had a local bus time table, or maybe a recipe on it.

  14. I've just noticed, on the "What you can go on and become", one of the options is "Search Specialist"

    Best leave that option for someone else I reckon.
  15. No it just didn't seem to show anything conclusive about lengths of training. I'll look to avoid being a search specialist in that case, shall leave such roles for people such as yourself.
