Gender equality except for criminals - Hariett Harman MP

#21

I did like that the bit where hariett believed that banging up mothers was against their, and their children's, right to family life and all that good stuff. I've got a canny suspicion that victim's rights are of little concern.

Besides which, if you're a parent do you not have a responsibility to not be naughty?

Interesting wider debate. Familial circumstances should be no shield from the law if you break it.

Witness the riots in northern mill towns a few years back, when many young Pakistani thugs got let off jail because, as they were allegedly only English speakers in their respective households, the rest of the family(ies) would have been disadvantaged by their incarceration.

One would have thought that their families, by dint of culture, would have understood the burden.

On all levels, and applied equally, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime.
Response to @Cold_Collation because the rest of the posters so far are Star readers;

Consider the wider picture.

What is punishment for?

And smiling happily to be on arrse

Harperson.

Har-person.

Harperson.

Having sat opposite her over a coffee table, she's got it and I'd have gone upstairs for an exploration of the UK/Uganda situation.

She's not a looker but...

Having said that, I'd say the same for a variety of late youth/middle aged political figures, TV presenters, local dinner ladies and School Mums, my wife, her friends, the Mums who dislike her, the ones who like her, random hot women, random ok-ish women, teachers, shopkeepers, their sisters, nieces, daughters, stepdaughters, colleagues, acquaintances, teenage stepdaughters, their friends, the girls in their year who don't like them, their Mums, the Mums' sisters, friends, co-workers, their yoga teachers, their sisters.... old photographs of hot women now dead, their descendants, immigrant women, women on YouTube, on Redtube....

Basically I'm here and so is the membership of Arrse.

Nothing on internet apart from this from January.

Protecting children whose mothers are in prison

Hariett isn't happy about the number of short sentences that are handed out which deny the right to family life, unduly affect children and aren't that effective.

Not if you're a man obviously. You deserve jail time. But if you're a woman and a mother who commits a crime it's bad...

For the record I believe that the punishment and rehabilitation system in this country needs shaking up. I just don't think it benefits anyone saying that you can be treated with more leniency if you're a mother.
Feminists, tell me again about this so-called 'patriarcy' that we live in?

That consequence serving as a deterrent if sufficiently harsh.

Of course, that would require police and judiciary willing to investigate the wrongdoing and enforce that consequence.

Notice how SpecOps - the ex magistrate, denigrates everyone (except for one arrser) as 'daily star' readers?
Perhaps we; the great unwashed, have no business in questioning the 'moral authority' of the judiciary, and that we should just get back to eating our potato peelings.

I heard on the radio that some MPs/Judges etc. who want to have no jail sentences for ANY crime where the perpetrator is risk assessed and not posing an obvious threat to others. So would a murderer who convinced the powers that be the act was a once off, out of character blip be allowed to walk with community service etc?

That might be an extreme example but there are many other crimes where it would seem to me that anything less that a prison sentence (even if the perp has reformed, repented, seen the light and become a living saint) would be plain wrong.

I wouldn't go as far as totty but she's certainly posh - privately educated, niece of an earl and so on...
Ah, a proper socialist then.

Yes, but we’ve moved away from the concept of punishment to rehabilitation.
And that is part of the issue, prison should be punishment or there should be periods of punishment..e.g When in military nick it was part punishment and part rehab, Prison should be part we don't want you in here again and part right lets sort your education and issues out. Reward when people do good, breaking rocks, no telly etc etc when they screw up.

Hence the "create the fear of prison" line.

Unfortunately, there are those who don't, and never will, fear going to prison; either because they think they won't be caught, or because they simply don't care any more.

Some need punishment. Some need help.

Which isn't bad.

Except where the concept of punishment is completely forgotten. Then rehab is seen as soft and a 'reward'.
Exactly. What incentive do kids have to work hard, if at the end of the day they are seeing that 'crime does pay'.
Enough of this wishy washy happy clappy bs.

Maybe because they acknowledge the arrser in question has a point?

All need both.
