GAA Hurling Finals 2013

Ah camogie, that nice friendly Celtic game I played as a girl nearly fifty years ago, extremely violent and exceedingly dangerous. The mixed gender games were by far the best, that was where we girls honed our skill of successfully battering the male of the specie. The difference between the Irish and the Breton version is our “ball” is sheathed in metal thus it does more damage when it hits something - hopefully an opponent. A 600 gram object about the size of a hockey ball flying around at head height and at warp speed is something to be very wary of; otherwise you are certain to be visiting the local hospital. Then there is a very good chance somebody will try and maim you with their axe-shaped camán – broken bones were a regular occurrence – those were the days.
