FUTURISTIC BOOKS AND FILMS SET IN DATES THAT HAVE NOW PASSED

It is always interesting to read or watch stories set at a date in the future, often predicting worlds run by robots, computers, dictators, or post nuclear wars. A few easy starters:

Orwell's 1984, written in 1949.

2001 A Space Odyssey: released in 1968.

The film "Rollerball" written as a story in 1973, released as a film in 1975, set in 2018.

Any other offers?

Not a book, but a boardgame.

Scary.

Even though the film ends in 2036, I'd nominate "Things to Come" from 1935, as the bulk of the movie takes place in 1970 and before.

You've mentioned 2001 but not 2010 . It's not as popular or as acclaimed as Kubrick's work but I still find it to be a very enjoyable film and the SFX, particularly the model work, is very good.
The world of 2010 apparently looked very much like the early '80s - and not too different from the real thing - except we'd got much better at space travel... and the USSR still existed.

Not a movie, but a TV show.

The last X-Files episode of the original run in 2001 ended with a countdown clock counting down to 22nd Dec, 2012, as the predicted arrival date and invasion of the aliens.

For the first episode of the 2016 run, they had to give the excuse that there wasn't an alien invasion, it was a conspiracy of men using alien technolgy to inject the population with alien DNA to shut down their immune system so they can wipe the planet clean with a virus and have a chosen few survive.

SDSR(s)

Other versions/titles have been made available over the years.

Edit - Well they were a sort of book no?

Back To The Future 2.

Soylent Green (1973) was set in the dystopian future of 2022 and envisages a world of food shortages, corrupt governments, and pollution where the world is divided between the bovine masses and cruel elites....completely ridiculous of course.....
