Defence chiefs have provoked fury by hosting senior Libyan military figures as Britain honoured her war dead.

Colonel Gaddafi, who used to back the IRA, sent five top men for the tour of UK bases. They visit RAF Brize Norton today (Thursday) to learn classified Army parachuting techniques.

Airmen on the base are furious at the secret trip.

They have been ordered to co-operate - and even wait on them as VIPs in the Officers' Mess.

For years, Col Gaddafi's forces supplied the IRA with the Semtex explosives and machine-guns used to kill British troops in Ulster.

PM Gordon Brown has been accused of cosying up to Libya to secure lucrative deals for British businesses.

One angry RAF officer said: "Libyan officers like these visitors were helping to kill our guys in Northern Ireland a few years ago.

"Now we're being forced to treat them as VIPs so someone else can get rich. We're selling out to these scum."

The timing of the week-long visit over Armistice Day was also dubbed "appallingly insensitive".

It comes three months after Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al Megrahi - who killed 270 people in 1988 - was allowed back to Libya on compassionate grounds.

Tory MP Ben Wallace - an ex-Army officer - said: "This will go down like a cup of cold sick for the relatives of those killed on Pan Am flight 103 and of those soldiers murdered by Libyan Semtex. It is a crass insult."

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "This is a routine visit

And? I've hosted Iraqis, Iranians (that was unofficial), godless commie Russians, Romanians and even the House of Commons Defence Select Committee. And it's not as if the Mess at Brize is Banqueting House or even Langhams, is it?

    You get on with it.

You do realise that if we've put them up at the Gateway, then the PM will be broadcasting by lunchtime that "this nation is now at war with Libya"...

Stand in plane, jump out of plane, hope parachute opens, hit ground. Doesn't sound too complicated to me.

  7. I bet 98% of them don't give a flying fuck.

It's like on the news when something happens and the newsreader says 'The whole community are devastated'. No they're not. Only the hand-wringers and those close to the family are.

  8. Alas this country is on the "edge of a power disaster" or something similar, we need their oil...

And, unfortunately, we need every friend we can get in that area of the world. So past 'mistakes' go out of the window.
