Friends Son wants to join TA

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Not being a TA Guru was wondering if someone could help with the following questions my friends son has asked:

Committal - actually what will he be signing up for, so many nights so many weekends, Exercises ect.

Tours - Will he be dicked or does he have to put his name forward to deploy on one.

Termination - is there a set period or can he just pack his bags and **** off.

He is a good robust lad and I think he will relish the challenge, but would like to pass on reliable info than shite. :D :D

Lets hope he is joining because he want's to dor Op Tours and is not just interested in sitting on his rear end and picking up the bounty at the end of the year.

There are many TA guys now deploying on a regular and often bases. I would like to think the day's of the Bounty Hunter has/is ending.
  3. To be honest that was the question from Mummy....bless her :D
  4. Ref committment- 15 days in camp and about the same 'out of camp' (weekends and drill nights). In his first year he will do (probably) more than that, but not by alot. He will be expected to attend very regularly as a recruit and immediatly afterwards.
Tours- If he doesnt want to go then dont join. Once you get the 'brown envelope' through the door then you are going. There are exceptions but hopefully he will want to go.
Termination. As far as I am aware he can just sack it, unless he has just had a 'brown envelope' through the letterbox.

He is best to go to the local TAC and ask these questions.

Quick question, has the rubbish about not qualifying for your bounty as you were on ops finished or are they still playing silly buggers with that one?
  6. they are STILL playing silly buggers.

had to do 6 days in camp, when i returned from heric.

Will that mean a TA Soldier will get an operational bonus + a bounty.

My bold, my impression is that until you are on the plane then nothing is really fixed, I know of a few TA SNCO's who pulled various reasons not to go including one who toured long enough to get his TELIC gong then pulled a compassionate.
Most brown envelopes should only go to those who have indicated a willingness otherwise in his first year he wont really be ready to deploy!
  9. Committal - The minimum is 26 (I can never remember) thats 15 days on Ex or a course and then made up of drill nights and weekends.

Tours - Only a few specialised TA units get mobilised without a choice but they are on different contracts, We are still on intelligent (or what ever they're calling it now a days) mobilisation which means he will only get the letter if he volunteers.

Termination - normally termination is very easy, most units will give him a 6 month Leave of Absence to sort his head out rather then let him just leave, but expressing his wish to leave and then an interview with the OC will get it rolling.
  10. Thanks waitout much appreciated will pass this on :D

With the caveat that if he joins a Specialist / Nationally Recruited / Whatever we're called this week unit, the minimum commitment is 19 days (including camp).
