The 20th anniversary of the bombing of the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior in Auckland harbour will be marked on 10 July.

The bombing, carried out by French secret service agents, was an attempt to sabotage the 1985 Greenpeace campaign against Pacific Island nuclear testing.

The attack resulted in the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior and the death of crew member Fernando Pereira, a freelance photographer.

The French Government tried to deny their involvement and a major cover-up ensued. By September the French defence minister Charles Hernu had resigned and France paid New Zealand $7m compensation.

Dominique Prieur and Alain Mafart posed as Swiss tourists. Look at faces of terrorists

The agents were tried in an ordinary court by an ordinary judge on an ordinary charge - manslaughter, as prosecutors did not have enough evidence for a murder case.

Mafart and Prieur were sentenced to ten years imprisonment for Mr Pereira's manslaughter and seven years for arson.

In 1986 they were transferred to a French jurisdiction to serve their terms but by May 1988 both had been released.
I hope that terrorists that performed these blasts in London would be captured later or sooner. But they should be on trial for terrorism, not only for 'manslaughter'.

Once again my sincere condolences for Londoners, for British people.

I must be a bit thick this morning, what exactly is your point in posting this story. Interesting though it is i don't see the link with suicide bombers in London. The French partially bungled the job (Operation Satanique). But unless you know better, Prieur and Mafart didn't actually plant the device that sank the Rainbow Warrior and there was no intent to kill anyone. Manslaughter was probably as much as would stick. NZ was pretty upset about the whole affair and unlikely to have let the guilty parties off lightly if they could have gotten them on a bigger charge. The real bombers got away. I understand that there were three teams of agents behind the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior:

Team One: Alain Mafart and Dominique Prieur, responsible for reconnaissance and logistics. Both were caught.
Team Two: The crew of the yacht Ouvea, which brought in the limpet mines.
Team Three: The unknown divers who carried out the July 10 bombing.
