Hundreds flee as military drill sparks bushfire in Marseille

A wildfire sparked by practice shelling by the military raged on the outskirts of the southern French city of Marseille overnight, threatening hundreds of homes.

The blaze, one of the worst to hit France in recent years, hit the eastern Trois-Ponts suburb of the southern city yesterday, forcing scores of residents to flee the flames.

Luc Venot of the National Forestry Office said 400 to 500 houses were threatened by the fire, approaching……


……About 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres) of brush was razed by the blaze, Mr Champon said.

"We are in a defensive mission for the moment," he added, pointing to "problems with the lie of the land" and difficulties in accessing water points.………

It is not usual to see the frog army playing soldiers in suburbia (and probably not a bad recruiting tool either), but surprised they have an ex going on in the holiday season, scare the sh1t out of some cloggy in his caravan.
I am guessing the reason is the heat, its 40+ once inland from the coast down there, good practice I suppose.
