Formula 1 - 2018 season

It was a 50/50 accident between Verstappen and Ocon. Hamilton summed it up neatly by asking why he didn't give room. you "always" have to expect a back marker to do something "stupid" even if it's not stupid. Verstappen should have given space, didn't, and paid the price.

Horner should have anticipated the hot headed reaction and had Max's trainer intercept him before weigh-in and cooled him down a few notches, but then again, I remember Schumacher trying to lay out Coulthard and Senna shaking Brundle warmly by the throat.

I’d call the accident itself 50/50; if they had been racing for position, it would just have been a racing accident. But Max was leading the race and had it all to lose. All he had to do was give room.

Losing the win was 100% Max’s fault. I doubt he’ll learn because he’s surrounded by sycophants blowing smoke up his Arrse.

That's pretty much the accepted interpretation - apart from Henry the Hoover up there.
It's not. Only Verstappen haters have this interpretation. He has already many enemies, being the number one or possible number one always makes people jealous. Ocon's move doesn't make sense. A kamikaze overtaking by a backmarker, even in the impossible event that his kamikaze move worked, after 50 meters blue flags and he has to slow down and let Verstappen by.

The leader of the race doesn't have to slow down with the runnerup only a few seconds behind because a backmarker doesn't know how to drive. The backmarker has to give space, that's the point of blue flags. Senna said this all throughout his career.

It seems the budget cap rule is going through. They want to set a cap of $200M. Mercedes and Ferrari spend about 450M, Red Bull 350M but they have to buy the power units, Renault 250M. Mercedes seems to agree because after winning many times there's no point to keep spending a fortune for something they already got. Ferrari used to veto the budget cap but the new managers seem to understand that money is not the only way to win. Reducing costs would help all teams and let them hire real drivers instead of paying drivers.

Hamilton puts number 1 in front of car instead of 44. It's a hint of retirement. He never did it on the many championships he's won. As if he thinks it's the last race he can use the number 1. There have been some voices of retirement because it's not worth for him to continue. Let's say Red Bull and Mercedes make a similar car in 2019, if Verstappen beats Hamilton the record books would be rewritten. Hamilton wouldn't be the best driver of his era anymore. So why should he continue, just to win one more championship after having many already? It's not worth it for him. He has more to lose than to gain.

More to lose?

He obviously stands a good chance of winning a couple more titles and equaling or beating shumacher.

The Merc should be competitive next year

No, he has more to lose. It's like Senna and Schumacher in 1994. Senna should have retired at the end of 1993. Just to have a chance of winning once more when he has won many times already, it's not worth to put on the plate his record books of being the best of his era. If Verstappen is faster than him next year then Hamilton goes back to being a number 2 and HIstory books are rewritten. If he retires he will be the best driver of his era no matter what Verstappen does.

Do you think that the Red Bull will be faster?

Can't see it myself

Christ, but you really do talk some crap.

Similar to Mercedes. Notice the end of this season, Red Bull is competitive. What's the point for Hamilton to continue? To wait until Verstappen has a championship car like Senna did with the Benetton in 1994? It's nonsense. Senna in the first race of 1994 couldn't keep the pace of Schumacher because Schumacher was faster on a similar car. No point waiting for the next big champion to explode.

That only makes sense if you believe that Lewis views his legacy as more important than the joy of racing and competing.

Posterity is great when you're old.

Why give up at your peak?

He won the title almost flawlessly in arguably not the best car

Jesus christ I thought Niko's car was going to go up in flames.

Let's say he waits until Verstappen has a competitive car and Verstappen beats him. All his wins would lose value. He wouldn't be remembered as the best of his time but only as the second best to Max Verstappen. It's not worth for him to continue.

Mick Schumacher to drive in Formula 2. Mercedes is after him and Liberty knows the big commercial success that a Schumacher-Verstappen duel for the championship would bring to F1. If Bottas is that slow also in 2019 he will probably take the Mercedes seat. Meanwhile on the final test Leclerc on Ferrari is fastest than Vettel by 3 tenths. If he's 0.3 seconds faster than Vettel he will be neck on neck with Hamilton.

2019 rule changes, the downforce is reduced by 30% and maybe 2 pit stops. Analysts estimate that by developing the new wings the downforce will be similar to 2018 but then they have to be redesigned. It's Newey's ground.

The Honda powerplant is also a key component
