Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Since coming back over this side of the water, I've been swanning around some of the old gaffs, Minden, Soest, etc. There's been some incredible changes to some of these places. I was thinking about photographing some of the old places (including bars!) and putting them up on the gallery.

Anybody else here get nostalgic about days gone by?

    Or is it just me?

I'm off up to Soest tomorrow,. I'll see if I can get a photo of the 'Big Ben'.

Does anybody remember the name of the disco at the Elizabeth Bks end of the Weser Bridge (opposite side from Studio M's). It was owned by an ex Catering Corps fella. Can never remember it's name. Not that it matters as its well shut.

How about the 'City Club' in Paderborn?

'Geordies' Bar in Sennelager has been levelled and is now a REWE supermarket.

Did anyone from Soest ever go boozing in Buren?

Sorry to hear of the demise of Geordies Bar in the 'Laager', is he working in the frozen food department?
  3. It's been closed for yonks by all accounts. Some of the Toms haven't even heard of the place. Jocks Bar next door (The Zum Tower as I recall) is a hotel of some sort.

The Senne Eck is still open apparantly!
  4. Yes it is
  5. How about Ripon Barracks in Bielefeld (HQ 1(BR) Corps), and the only major HQ in Germany which wasn't slipper city, but was great if you like excercises. Apparently its got a Burger King and a school in it now!!
It used to look like [IMG] that. I'd like to see what it looks like today.
  6. I passed there two weeks ago. It's been taken over by some sort of health place . There may be a school in it, I don't know. One of the blocks is pink, one blue and another yellow. There are houses being built on it as well, at the back. The Burger King isn't in the barracks , it's between Ripon and the other one nearest the Autobahn.

The red Ford Escort at the bottom right of your photo isn't there anymore either.

There's another barracks nearer the town centre, but I don't know what it's called.

    When was that photo taken?
  7. Does anyone know what happened to the Caserne in Lahr and the Black Forest Officer's mess after the Canadians left?
  8. Ripon Bks clearly changed considerably over the years up to when that photo was taken! The barracks closer to the autobahn were Catterick, where 10 Regt RCT lived and boxed (usually on disco nights).
  9. Detmold - Hobart barracks has been turned into a fcuking Golf Course. Spent a major part of my life there both as a brat and squaddie. I can't remember the names of the bars (I didn't drink much then) but I could give you good directions, mostly they are out the front gate and down the hill

Will be going back sometime this years with a camara.

  10. Just been to Soest today. The old Belgian Bks are run down, overgrown and vandalised, the barracks in the town (St Sebastion?) looks like Ripon Bks, one pink block, one blue etc etc. Didn't get as far as Salamanca...........but from the road it looks like the accommodation is missing. Only the hangars can be seen.

All the Quarters are still there in Army Quarter Magnolia, but occupied by civvies.

From the road the Bks at Korbecke look to be in sh*t state as well. There's what appears to be a refugee home next to it, some prefab with about 20 satellite dishes outside. Lots of blankets for curtains.

MDN, I went into the town for a couple of hours but I can't find the 'Big Ben'. I saw a couple of buildings which slightly resembled it, but whose 'shop fronts' look to have been renovated. There's a disco called the 'Sonic'. I'm sure that wasn't around before. Maybe it's the old Big Ben. Can you remember what street it was on?

Had the obligatory wander round to the Mohnesee to show the kids the 'back of the net'.
  11. You need Aunty Stella mate not me, I was never at Soest..... 3 Regt was for puffs and druggies :D
  12. Bielefeld Barracks names :-

    Catterick - 10 Regt RCT
    Ripon - HQ & HQ Regt 1 (BR)Corps
Mossbank - 1 Corps Troops Wksps REME
Richmond - 6 Ord Bn RAOC & DMED BAOR RAMC
Redcar - 63 Ord Coy RAOC
Rochdale - 64 Ord Coy RAOC
    Harrogate - 623 MCTG RCT (????)/Pioneers PLSU

If I remember rightly Richmond was nearest the Stadtmitte - and pretty near PC69  - only Catterick and Mossbank are active now I believe.
  13. What made me think that you were ex 3 Regt then?
  14. The barracks near the town centre (and PC 69's) was Richmond barracks (6 Ord). And why do they have better night club names on the continent?!
  15. I don't know, I was quite fond of 'Staxx' at Catterick. Not.
