FOIA: MOD says 4 out of the 6 Type 45s will have Harpoons from the Type 22s

#2
So the destroyers will be very good at AAW but shit at everything else.

If a carrier or amphibious task force ever has to be deployed the whole fleet will have to deploy to protect them.

Well done trigger. Any other stunning insights into Maritime Warfare you would wish to share?

Cause a load of anti-sub merlins on said T45s armed with torpedos and sonar will be useless....

Er, can I have a subscription to confused dot com? Why are people talking anti submarine when...

The Harpoon is an all-weather, over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile system, developed and manufactured by McDonnell Douglas (nowBoeing Defense, Space & Security). In 2004, Boeing delivered the 7,000th Harpoon unit since the weapon's introduction in 1977. The missile system has also been further developed into a land-strike weapon, the Standoff Land Attack Missile (SLAM).
The regular Harpoon uses active radar homing, and a low-level, sea-skimming cruise trajectory to improve survivability and lethality

Good news. Now can we have the other six built?

It makes sense to use kit for the decommisioned T22s. What's happening to the Goalkeeper system? Any other tasty bits that can be used elsewhere?

depends on the scenario. High intensity at least 2 type 45 and 3/4 23s/26s

Goalkeeper is being phased out in favour of Phalanx

Because the ship is not fitted with any major anti-sub systems, being that it's an anti-aircraft destroyer, it can have a merlin or lynx fitted with torpedos though which some people overlook and under estimate.

Or because folks are getting confused with Sub Harpoon, which is basically the same weapon though fired from a submarine via one of the tubes and a big white missile tube type sabot thing. Anyway, from a boats perspective a stealth or fire and forget weapon it is not.

All golden rivets from decommissioned ships to be re fitted on QE class.

Will there be enough available?

A load?

Max 2 helos

Is that enough to cover 360 degrees out to x miles 24/7 ?

Which is good for ASW but not for anti-shipping.

And the other helos on the escorts, along with the RFA and LPH.

Who does 360 24/7 ASW Ops - I take it you have never heard of Limiting Lines of Approach?

Lynx has confirmed surface kills

And to add to guns. If you are in range to use magazine launched stingray then the submarine has been in range to fire anti ship torpedoes and missiles for a loong time. Its a last ditch defensive system.

Thats why you use asw helicopters.
