Flying a desk

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Apologies for starting yet another careers based question.

I'm aware that as an Officer AAC pilot you can hope to fly a couple of tours before your relegated to flying a mahogany desk instead. Can anyone shed any light on what you do on these postings other mountains of admin? I'd quite like to end up as a QFI for a posting if that's even possible.

Also, what happens to those who fail flying training?

    TIA

  2. I would like to know a bit about the first Q as well. I understand you do a flying tour then go for your aircraft commanders course (hope that's the correct name!) and do another tour, then you are likely to get a desk job unless you get QHI at Wallop or Shawbury. I know there's a rather interesting thread HERE on AAC careers as a pilot.

  3. WannaB, there's a fairly large amount of dross posted in that linked site, I'm afraid (such as the part about serving with Inf/Cav for a year or more first - that's an option, it's not compulsory).

  4. Due to budget cuts, Mahogany has been replaced by plywood from IKEA.

  5. Plywood, that's me out of a job then!

  6. Thanks for that Goon. I was aware about the inv and cav bit being a lie as I have spoken to careers advisors within the AAC and got the gen first hand.
