Why are they RFA and not HMS?
That's a good question. Being all big and grey and important and all, one would assume teh Andrew would have put the HMS designation on it.

Is it a bit like:

Royal Logistic Corps
Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
Royal Engineers
Adjutant General's Corps

Useful bit of kit.
That will help keep the jolly jack tars at sea week after week, month after month, year after year with no need for landfall....
...Ah, erm...,...Bugger....

Why are they Royal Marines and not Her Majesty's Marines?

Excellent topic @Magic_Mushroom - for some wider context these are VERY impressive ships, and are bloody big. They are 200m long and weigh 39,000 tonnes - thats as long as, and twice as much displacement as, an Invincible class carrier. We are getting four of them, which when coupled with the Waves gives us a rather noce tanking fleet, which our allies will be very, very keen to play with.

Lets not ask what happened to the FSS, PCRS, OMAR, and other bits abandoned though or where the manning is coming from...
