Fireteams 2020: USMC & Army

FYI...

USMC will have three multiples of four plus a command element of three.

US Army has two multiples of four and “Sarge.”

Just for clarification, you've chosen to compare a USMC Platoon against a US Army Squad...

A US Army Platoon will have 3 or 4 Squads of various composition, depending on designation. Looking specifically at 'Fire Teams' each squad would be 2 fire teams (Alpha and Bravo) each with 4 OR4s and under and 1 OR5, the combined Squad having 1 OR6 as Squad Leader, and the combined platoon having 1 OR7 as Platoon Sergeant and 1 OF1 or OF2 as Platoon Leader, with the addition of an RTO and a Medic or two attached.

9 man Army Infantry squad is simply based on the BFV thats how many fit inside

Prior to 1986 a Infantry squad size varied dependent on its role

BFV- 9 men (Cdr, Gnr, Dvr +6 Dismounts)
Mech- 11 men (T/C, Dvr +9 Dismounts)
Infantry-Air Assault/Airborne/Ranger/Leg 11 men (SL, 2x fire teams of =1xATL, 1x Autorifleman, 1x Grenadier M79/M203, 2x Rifleman)

it was decided in 86 to formalize as then the SL would get the same credit for leading the same size element on a NCOER (NCO Evaluation Report). prior to this it was thought it unfair to the BFV squad leaders chances for promotion to be leading the smallest squads.
