Finding All Your Old Pensions?

Smudger2489

How and/or where do I find all my old pension's from the various companies I have worked for?

Must be a few of them, won't be alot of money, but once found could they all be moved into one place or even into the one I have now?

Is best bet to find an account who deals just in pensions?

I would just write to the companies HR dept and ask them to provide details of the pensions.

Ceased trading.

Couple of them over the year's.

If you don't have the paper work you could always try googling "name of company"+"pension" and see what pops up.

Pension companies search for Gone Aways (customers who they have lost contact with). There are companies who specialise in finding people and will use your NI, name, DOB etc to hunt you down.

Approaching that age now too the Mrs has recently sorted all our stuff out with a view to consolidating, and optimising.

She modelled all of ours, particularly hers, and discovered that sometimes it is better to just leave some pensions as stand alone. I don't understand it but, she said that bringing some of them together would just cost more than it would make/save. What I am saying is: Don't just bundle them for the sake of bundling them, look at the financial implications of each one.

As a quick pension aside:

For those of you who are overseas and have not paid into the UK national insurance pension pot you may want to consider contributing to ensure you receive the full UK State pension. Twats changed the rules after I moved to the USA bumping it up from 30 years contributions to 35 years contributions. I made up a couple of years with lump sum payments and have been paying monthly for the remaining 3 years, I shall be done in a year. So if you are outside the UK have a look at the .Gov website to get a pension quote and give them a call (yes they do answer the phone and are very helpful) to find out how much you can dobble in to get the full pension benefit.

Some further research required - It is my belief that Ex forces will still not receive the full State Pension even if they make the necessary contributions to make up the full 35 years NI Contributions.

A deduction will be made for the length of time you were contracted out as a member of HM Forces.

Unfortunately I cannot remember where I read it or I would post the link.

Most occupational pensions were contracted out of what was SERPS so no full State Pension

That isn't the one I was thinking of.

I think it might have been this one

You are correct.

However, the contracted out element can more or less be made up by adding some extra years onto the 35 years. The wife does all the admin on that stuff so I don’t fully understand the ins and outs. If you call the pensions people tell them what you want, they do the calculation, and send you a form detailing what is required to as near as dammit get the full pension. I’m pretty sure when I am done I will have paid a couple of extra years on top so that in reality I exceed the 35 years and end up Quids 1.75 short of a full UK pension.

without looking at all the numbers I think I paid about 750 per year to buy a couple of years To make up the contracted out shortfall. That bumps the pension up about ten to twelve quid a week. The extra investment pays for itself within a couple or so years so it is worthwhile.

Give them a call and have a chat to see if you can increase the pension value.
