Financial incentives to continue military service

Mate of mine from Dublin joined the US Marines four years ago and is now a Force Recon sniper. At the time he was not a US citizen he joined the ranks and has worked up to Sgt. He signed up for 4 years with the intention of then leaving and returning home. However the Marines offered him $100,000 as a one off payment to sign up for a further 4 years. Tax free. This is on top of his normal pay!

He said the US Marines are having difficulty holding on to highly qualified/trained troops like FR and this is helping with their retention and saving them having to train up new recruits to that level which is very expensive.

Has anyone ever heard of such a one of payment in the forces here? Pilots in the RAF/AAC even?

There is a £50,000 retention bonus for High Threat ATOs coming in soon, I believe it is 4 years and must include a High Threat tour

Yes, two or three years ago, the MOD offered retention bonuses of about £30-50k for pilots. Submariners were offered a sizeable bonus as well, IIRC.
