Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. The great Arthur Lowe was a former soldier of D (DLOY) SQN RMLY

    www.sterlingtimes.org/mainwaring.htm

This got me thinking has anyone else got any famous people that used to serve in their regiments surely nobody can top capt Mannering as a previous squaddie. Give it your best shot but they have to be pretty impressive to out do capt Mainwaring.

ps I always wondered where our trainers got there tactics lessons from!

  2. Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, Ken Barlow, Desmond Llewellyn ...............

  3. Bear Grylls, David Davies

  4. Who?

  5. Capt Noel Chavasse, VC & Bar, MC. RAMC

edited to add Corps (thanks Bambi) and MC

  6. Ahhh - RAMC. Very credible.

  7. Is this a sneaky way to find out who everyone is with?

  8. Geoffrey Woolley VC

First TA VC of WW1 IIRC?

  9. Ken Barlow?
I knew his "Uncle" Albert went over the top with the Manchester Regiment as did Nora Batty's husband Joe from Last of the Summer Wine; but Ken Barlow just reminds me of one of those winging nigs that thinks a regimental bath is some kind of torture!
