Familiarisation Visits

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. My application to join the Army has been deferred until May next year due to medical grounds. I want to join the Royal Artillery as an Observation Post Assistant. I was wondering if I would still be able to arrange some familiarsation visits while ineligable to apply?

    Thanks for any help, chaps.
  2. Morty,

Depending on your med condition, I would strongly advise a visit to your nearest TA unit, they should be able to give you an idea what being an OPA is all about over a weekend. If your deferment if definitely for a year, then you may be able to fill in this time with the TA to get some idea of the job. Good luck!

  3. Short version.

You can't join as an OPA. You join as a Gunner, Driver or Comms person. Once you get to your Regiment (i.e. a Field Regiment), you will (in effect) be talent-spotted as a future OPA.

Or you could join any other part of the Army and then join 4/73 Special OP Battery.
