Eyesight

I've noticed recently that my eyesight is deteriorating at a rapid rate of knots, to the extent that I'm wearing 1.5 magnification reading glasses.

Even when driving I've noticed that things are a bit blurry, I had a medical many years ago for the RAF ( quiet in the cheap seats) where I was told that I had 20/20 vision, essentially fighter pilot standard (every other test proved I was as thick as shit though).

I have noticed it's getting worse rather quickly?

I had similar symptoms about tens years ago. Went to opticians, have kerataconus in both eyes. Not sight threatening currently and I manage with contact lenses the size of dinner plates. But worrying all the same.

Get them checked ASAP.

My eyesight hasn't deteriorated much for decades, so I can say with some authority that wanking does not cause sight loss

That’s all very well, but did you have a control person? Someone not wanking to check your eyes against?

Could be Cataracts. It starts as a slight blur which doesn't go away, gradually gets worse until you start losing depth perception, colours start fading, bright incoming light spreads out and starts blocking your vision, and objects start to become blurry as well. Glasses don't help. The operation requires open surgery one eye at a time with a three month gap between ops, painless and quick though and when you wake up and walk outside it brings you to tears - the colours are back, YOU CAN SEE AGAIN.

I now have plastic eye lenses and in certain light quite often receive 'your eyes look amazing' comments, apparently they give off a prism effect, not that I can see it though.

ps: The Op doesn't correct vision per say, if you needed glasses before hand you still need glasses afterwards. Edit: Others have pointed out that now there is an option to correct vision.

Even the smallest sign of blurriness when driving puts you in a dangerious position, if you have a RTA, and it is found that your eyesight is defective, your insurance could be declared null and void,

@Old Stab - age is a factor but for goodness sake go to a reputable optician. I have friends who have gone to two opticians just to double check (what's the price of an eye test in the scheme of things!) Father in law seemed ok driving until one day we were in the car and he mentioned the kid playing in front of a house - it was an estate agents sign!
Cataracts
Kerataconus
Macualar degeneration
Ageing
Comes to us all in degrees

And for goodness sake - if things are blurry when driving - please please don't drive! Every year there is a case of some incident because the driver couldn't see.
(Easy for me to say but will you see that guy on the pushbike?)

I have no idea how old you are, that's why I said 'could be' :)

I got my eyes fixed at 41, and the specialist did say at the time I was fairly young to be having Cataracts but have them I did.

I also described the symptoms in case anyone else would benefit from the info.. so nurr.

I get what you're saying.
It's not that blurry. Almost like I could see in HD and have gone back to analogue.
I've noticed it more with trying to read the screen on my phone . If I thought there was a risk of it interfering with driving, I drive for a living, I'd be straight into the opticians.

That said, I'll book in for an eye test as soon as I can, just to be on the safe side.

Please do - eyesight deteriorates without us realizing and we get used to it - bit like a car, we're happy until someone else gets in and says "bloody hell those brakes are soft!" or we get in a different car and screech to a halt when we think our foot is just covering the brake.....
