Express: "‘National Disgrace!’ Britons Furious As Royal Navy Declared Smaller Than Italy's - Poll"

Beyond Fisheries and Border Force why do we need any hulls for defending home waters ? Surely all that defence/denial stuff could be handled much better, safer and cheaper by shore-based missle batteries? Ditto home air defence?

Good luck with trying to identify and shadow a foreign warship, or escort an airliner, with a missile. How do you define 'home waters' anyway? Territorial waters, the territorial waters of the territories, EEZ....?

Also what about things like submarines and mines?

I don't imagine identifying or tracking around the British Isles would be a showstopper. Push comes to shove I have an App on my phone I could share.

I accept you'd need a bit of extra kit for the subsea side of things.

The area covered would probably dictate where the batteries would be sited and the types of missiles deployed.

Excellent opportunity to develop equipment and systems with a real export potential.

I suspect that this is actually an urban myth and Cameron is not guilty as charged. I don't think the deterrent budget has actually been ring-fenced since Polaris. I'm fairly sure the V-boats and Trident came out of the navy's budget and while there was some sort of campaign that tried to get Successor funded at centre-level, I'm fairly sure it never became policy.

Happy to see evidence to the contrary obviously.
it’s been an issue since the 60’s.

when the then 1SL Mountbatten was told the RN were to become the keepers of the strategic detergent, he said it wLuke be the end of a carrier based Navy, and the Navy as a strategic force.

And, take that leap of why we don't have any second-line equipment designed for home defence or even an effective air defence missile battery?? its probably worthless and the money is better spent on the point of the spear which we regularly like to chuck at foreign climbs...... My argument was always the cost of big ticket items, reduces that spear to a single shot weapon and if its lost, we are naked as a result.

A defence review would not only cost the length and lethality of our spear, but also price up a barebones defence.
