I don't imagine identifying or tracking around the British Isles would be a showstopper. Push comes to shove I have an App on my phone I could share.Good luck with trying to identify and shadow a foreign warship, or escort an airliner, with a missile. How do you define 'home waters' anyway? Territorial waters, the territorial waters of the territories, EEZ....?
it’s been an issue since the 60’s.I suspect that this is actually an urban myth and Cameron is not guilty as charged. I don't think the deterrent budget has actually been ring-fenced since Polaris. I'm fairly sure the V-boats and Trident came out of the navy's budget and while there was some sort of campaign that tried to get Successor funded at centre-level, I'm fairly sure it never became policy.
Happy to see evidence to the contrary obviously.
And, take that leap of why we don't have any second-line equipment designed for home defence or even an effective air defence missile battery?? its probably worthless and the money is better spent on the point of the spear which we regularly like to chuck at foreign climbs...... My argument was always the cost of big ticket items, reduces that spear to a single shot weapon and if its lost, we are naked as a result.Beyond Fisheries and Border Force why do we need any hulls for defending home waters ? Surely all that defence/denial stuff could be handled much better, safer and cheaper by shore-based missle batteries? Ditto home air defence?
