Executive Outcomes operations in Sierra Leone

#22
I am sure there was a story about Executive Outcomes (correction - it was Sandline) having a helicopter repaired aboard an RN frigate in 1999 - I think.

Mercenaries met with four officials from the FO

In Sierra Leone, Sandline also claimed to have regularly briefed British military officials including Lt Col Peter Hicks, and Andrew Gale, the military adviser to the United Nations special envoy in Sierra Leone. They say they also co-operated closely with the British military operations launched in protection of British civilians in Sierra Leone following Major Johnny Paul Koroma's coup. Sandline said its members even went aboard HMS Cornwall, situated off Freetown and that naval engineers helped repair a damaged helicopter being operated by Sandline.

EA & Sandline might have been the major players (I can't remember if EA were still in the country in 99) but a few months prior to the UNAMSIL deployment 2 or 3 smaller UK based private sec firms were subbied out there for 2-3 months at a time - I thnk under Sandlines main contract. I went with one of the teams & we were doing the usual escorts of vips, resup runs up country & some MSF protection on the side when their mobile teams were going out in to the bush to the remoter places providing medic care.

War Dog by AJ Venter has some of what you are looking for but maybe not in as much detail as you appear to be after. He was at least there during some of their operations.

Fred Marafano co-wrote 'From SAS to blood Diamond Wars' with Hamish Ross and there are numerous references to Executive Outcomes in it.
Fred was a cracking guy and an excellent tracking instructor on the Jungle Warfare course however not sure how intellectually deep he will go with complex issues!
