El Alamein Rememberance 2002

Having just read a feature in the Daily Mail, I read with horror that the Governement did nothing to fund veterans (UK), travel and accomodation, etc to North Africa, whilst the Australian and Polish Govts funded their veterans to attend. Also a bugler from, I beleive, the Para Regt had to be paid for by the Veterans Assoc. to the tune of £1800, to cover his flight and accom etc. For a start I cant believe this to be true (please correct me, I hope). If it is, surely the MOD could see itself short of £1800 in some muliti-million budget. Or at worse the Regiment could have wavered the fee. Shocking! If it wasn't for these servicemen at El Alamein, we would all cutting about in big leather boots and speaking German. When did money start to creep into Rememberance? (Cynical I know!)
