I've read the book (in German) a couple of times. An excellent read. I've no idea how good or bad the English translation is.

But I also had the opportunity to meet Markus Wolf personally in 1992. A charming man and very entertaining.

The other day I read:

Forster, T.M. (1967): The East German Army: A Pattern of a Communist Military Establishment, George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London.

Obviously it is rather old, but it gives an excellent explanation of how far the tentacles of the Communist Party / State extended into all areas of the public and private lives of the East Germans.

I only hope Gordon Brown and his champagne soviets do not get their hands on it. We have all see what happened after they read 1984.
