eBooks

Unfortunately,, due to a few party poopers, I have shut this down. I hope everyone benefited and it's a real shame that we have so many budding copyright law enthusiasts here who did not appear to grasp the concept but i don't have time to deal with this and with them at the same time.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In another thread, people were organising the exchange of paper back books by post and naturally, the topic of ebooks came up, which of course cannot be posted. To facilitate this we have organised a place away from the site to do so.

A few of us have got together and put our ebook collections up for other to read. This started on another thread so i'm making a new one to make it easier to find.

It's coming along really well. I have had to lock it down with a password so you will have to message me to get the password but it is open to all arrse members, just pm and you'll get the password straight back.

There are two parts to this, a web library that you can flick through until you see something you like and then just grab it.

The other part is a dropbox (onedrive) for you to put new books in. There are no limits to the amount of books we can have in there.

PM me to get the passwords.

edited to add: please don't put anything dodgey on there like racist, extreme political stuff, porn or anything that you would not read openly on a plane or in a cafe etc..

Book listing removed on request :)

I am uploading mine at the moment. I am not listing all of them here though as I am doing this on my phone.

Great idea Frank.

Got some up, but connection problems at my end stopped me doing them all. Will finish uploading tomorrow.

If anyone needs special formats for their ebook reader just tell me, i'll set it up to auto convert to what you need. At the moment i convert everything to mobi and epub.

I've got a few thousand ebooks now but am a computer numpty and not familair with dropbox, etc.

Are you deduplicating or must we try (as well)?

I'm adding the books to the web library manually at the moment as the automated process is unreliable. It helps if you don't put duplicates in but I will remove any that I find anyway.

What really helps, more than not putting dupes in, is having a filename that only contains the author and book title. Anything else in the filename makes it hard for the software to identify the book and get the synopsis and cover.

How do we get to upload? is that an option?

the basic workflow is:

Upload into the dropbox > download from the web library

So upload into the drop box and it will eventually appear in the library (when i get around to it)

The detailed workflow (this is not important but might be of interest) is :

upload to dropbox
pick up book from drop box and import into library
remove drm
fix filenames
download metadata (covers etc)
deduplicate library
Publish to web server

some other things are happening too but i'm still working in it, auto adding tags and genres is my next focus as i want to be able to browse through certain genres.

This is a great idea, well done and thanks.

My original reply got lost in the ether.

I've got a calibre library I can contribute - assume onedrive has a web interface I can multi-upload thru?

If not I'll install the client, upload.

Could you pm me the details pls?

Unless you own the rights to the back catalogue of Terry Pratchett, Tom Clancy, Bernard Cornwell and Stephen King (unlikely I'll admit.....), I'd bin this thread.

Has it occurred to you that the COs might not be too impressed with copyright infringements being advertised on the site?

There is no copyright infringement of any kind happening in this thread or anywhere else on Arrse to the best of my knowledge.

It's a book exchange, like the one for paperback books being posted. We cant post ebooks to each other so this enables the same to be done with ebooks.

I removed the book listing though so as not to provoke the wrong idea further.

Good thinking Batman.

Isn't copying and distributing e-books (which you do not own the rights to) still infringement?
