East German / Soviet -- false-colours infiltration unit (M-48 & M-113)

#1
Hi guys

Steve Zaloga's book "Soviet Bloc Elite Forces" (1985) mentioned a DDR special forces unit equipped with M48s and M113s in Bundeswehr markings that was to be used for diversionary attacks. Was it seen by Brixmis. Did any info on this unit surface after reunification?

Geneva Convention rules aside, was this really just a training unit for the DDR -- or a real unit to be deployed on the battlefield?

Sounds not unlike the Red Star Company, that did tours of BAOR with WP kit.

I was touring the DDR in the mid 80s and never heard of such a unit. That doesn't mean it didn't exist, though.

Where would they have borrowed the kit from? Nicked from an Arab-Israeli war or Vietnam?

Think back. As welcome as you were, Bay City Rollers tribute bands weren't normally held party to sensitive state information, although you might've been able to trade Mullet secrets for some odd-shaped fruit and veg; white baggies with tartan edging might have bagged you a Trabbi.

And another thing, to the OP: It's considered impolite to stir up old shit on the "Tag der Deutschen Einheit"; can't it wait until tomorrow? Alternatively, leave them to it and watch them knock **** out of each other before very much longer...
