Early discharge - possibility or urban myth?

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Is it actually possible to get an early discharge if you have signed off and have a written offer of employment. If it is possible at what point in the final 12 months is it possible to slope off or is it really down to individual commanders discretion?

  2. IIRC it is true, if you have an offer of employment, or if like my last unit they just forgot I existed and I sloped after I quietly de-kitted and got all the required signitures.

  3. It's definitely gen in the RN, so I imagine it works tri-service. You need an offer of a job on paper and verifiable (they will phone and check!), you can only go up to three months early, and your unit needs to accept a gap in strength. You retain pension rights, you are simply being allowed to go and have a life that you can almost call your own.
