Drugs menace at UK's Afghan base
By JOHN HIGGINSON - Sunday, August 2, 2009

A security check at Camp Bastion
Drugs and alcohol are routinely being smuggled into Britain's biggest military base in Afghanistan, Metro has learned.

Heroin, amphetamines, steroids and alcohol are brought on to Camp Bastion in Helmand province by Russian contractors, military commanders claim.

Apart from fears that the contraband will get into the hands of British troops, it could also expose the hypocrisy of attempts to stamp out the drug trade, which funds much of the insurgency in Afghanistan.

I wondered why the officers mess were all massive gurning chods smelling of whisky.

On a more serious note, soldiers can get any of that stuff sent over to them in their mail if they wanted to. I had a few pints of brandy sent out in lucozade bottles. Can't have coffee without brandy!

That's great; right up until one of the bottles breaks and it destroys an entire bag of personal mail.

Happened several times on H7.

Scuse me if it sounds a bit thick, but, apart from Russian helichopper pilots (cos we haven't got any of our own, helicopters that is), WHAT Russian contractors are mooching around our war-fighting bases with bags of heroin?

Everyone from Heli crews - including all the ground teams, that's an awful lot of bodies - to barbers, shop assistants, and in Kandahar of course the ladies who run the massage parlours and various other essential services......

In short, if by 'Russians' you count anyone from a bit of land that was part of the Soviet empire, then bloody loads!

Thanks for that. The 'essential services' - does that come in the form of 'tall', 'slavic' and 'blonde'?
