A CHIP shop owner told of his relief yesterday after escaping a drink- drive ban – because he was sleepwalking.

Police caught up with George MacDonald, 74, after his worried wife, Lilian, 53, phoned to report that “something was wrong” with her husband.

The couple had enjoyed a few drinks at home in North Connel, near Oban, Argyll, after work last August, and George went to bed at 11pm.

But at 3am, wearing only his underpants and a nightshirt, he got into his Saab car and crashed into the garden fence at speed, before driving to a cemetery car park in Oban.

Sheriff Richard McFarlane let George off with a £500 fine and nine penalty points at Oban Sheriff Court on Monday, when he pled guilty to drink-driving.

George was twice the drink-drive limit when he was breathalysed but his agent Ron Mackenna said George had been sleepwalking and the sheriff chose not to impose the usual one-year ban.
