Doing a tour as a TA soldier before RMAS

Discussion in 'Join the Army - Regular Officer Recruiting' started by english_jock, Feb 26, 2010.

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Just passed my AOSB and am in my final few months of uni so I was intending to start at Sandhurst next Jan. However, I'm wondering if it's worth my while taking some time out before that, joining a TA unit as a jock and going out on HERRICK to get some experience?
  2. good luck, you'll be looking at well over a year before your even eligible (assuming you are not yet in the TA and assuming you want to go infanty). Look in another thread on Just TA and they are talking about being class 1 infanteer to go on the next herrick.

Think its class 2 for Sigs. It used to be the case that you could depoly straight after CIC but those days are long gone.
  3. Inf isn't an option as I'm a bird, but i've already got L1 for light guns and CPO through the OTC (not a TOTAL waste of time...) so was thinking of my local TA arty regt.

Guy I know has just done regular Sandhurst after doing a few years in the T.A. and he went to Iraq in 2004 or so. Can't do any harm, and will certainly give you a heads up the others may not have.
  5. English_jock -its actualy the reason I joined aswell. Can't be all bad having the experience and knowing how to play the game. I'm told not to let your DS at Sandhurst know you are TA though...

Only problem is that my regiment aren't likely to go on Herrick as they do specialist comms.
  6. Er just my 2p from limited experience, but from what I was told when I made enquiries at my local TA, if you currently have a reg officer application active at any stage of the process, then the TA cannot process an application for you.

Was told this about 3 months ago, so relatively up to date, but I don't obviously know that this is the case after you have passed AOSB, but it was what I was told when I asked them at pre-briefing stage.

The likelihood is that by following this course of action you would be delaying your entry to RMAS by at least two years for a benefit which would be slight at best. I would suggest that by going to RMAS asap, you will have the opportunity to get onto Herrick sooner than you would by following the TA route, and you wouldn't have stalled your officer career in the process.

If you were already a properly-qualified TA soldier - as opposed to an OTC cadet - and you had been asked to consider volunteering for a specific tour, then it might have been worth considering, but even then you would be introducing a year of delay into the commissioning process. My advice would have been 'no'.

Get properly trained and commissioned now and I guarantee that you will get as many op tours as you can handle afterwards.
  8. I think they'll know. Particularly if you wear campaign medals in line with that quaint old tradition of being properly dressed.

No don't. Go out and do all the things you won't be able to do when you have joined up.

  10. Cpunk's answer is a pretty good summary.

You wouldn't be the first to do this, at least two haven't come back.
  11. Cheers guys, advice taken. I don't fancy taking a minimum of a couple of years out, so I'm going to go and have fun in the southern hemisphere for a couple of months before 2 months of beasting myself getting super fit for PCCBC...

Good decision. Have fun and good luck on the course.
