Good question. Joker should have an opinion on this as well as others I hope. There is no criteria that I know of. Originally it was based on... before my time... music which was danceable... generally originating in America with many records by unknown generally Black artistes. Watching and listening to Ray Pollard.. Drifter and you should get an impression of his voice but he remained undiscovered and died of cancer around 4 years ago, with very little money to his name. A sad loss. For someone who knows nothing about Northern Soul (me)
What criteria does a song have to meet, to be classed as Northern Soul ?
So many NS tunes invoke personal feeling as with the Drifter with the ability to expend enourmous amounts of energy dancing to them... the Mod group Secret Affair had dance your heart out and that is what Northern is... emotion and heart. Crap dancer, good dancer, it's all one.
Many hip-hop and break dancing tunes and styles derive from Northern inspired dancing or music. Many records discovered in USA have been updated... Time Will Pass You By - Tobi Legend - YouTube by K.Minogue... which is shite. Real people, real music, emotion and the chance to dance...
However, someone better than me should explain... I just love to dance!
There is a typical beat and often a message in the music... although No, No, No, No, No No No might be a bit opaque
