We are looking to add to our current Dog handling team. If you have a passion for Animals and want to support in the security of defence sites across the UK this is a great opportunity to blend learning with practical experience. As a shift working Dog Handler, you will carry out patrolling duties that will cover your base site and potentially others in the locality. You will be part of a small team who will nurture and train the Military Working Dogs (MWD) dogs to assist you in your duties. If you like being in the outdoors this could be the perfect role for you to start, alongside your daily activities you will patrol around the units on uneven terrain, being able to work in the outdoors and keep physically fit by potentially covering 6 miles a day.

You will be assigned a working dog, and this will likely be dual handled. Full training is given to all successful applicants in this varied and unique post. Alongside training you will also be enrolled onto the MGS Foundation course, Dog Handler Course, to enable you to upskill your knowledge in this area and become a subject matter expert providing expert care and skill to your new role. We care about developing our staff and really want you to be immersed in learning as much as you can about the role, by funding this opportunity you will get to work alongside continuing your professional development.

As a Dog Handler you will working on a shift basis, this normally consists of working 2 days and 2-night shifts (12Hr Shifts) followed by 4 days off. A flexible shift fortnight is also incorporated into this pattern.
Job description
This is an important role and you will be responsible for providing overt security presence on sites and carrying out unarmed guarding duties to a high standard.

Some of your duties and activities may include but not limited to:
• Nurturing and training of assigned Dogs to the required standard
• Annual Licensing
• Continuation Training
• Upkeep of paperwork
• Using IT facilities
• Dog Welfare (for all MWDs on site)
• Daily upkeep of the Kennels (Disinfecting, sweeping and jet washing)
• Liaising with Dog Evaluation Officer and Kennel Supervisor
• Driving MOD vehicles (Essential for post)
• Controlling vehicular and pedestrian access and exit to/from site
• Issuing of passes
• Issuing and receipt of keys
• Searching of vehicles, baggage, personnel, buildings and open areas
• Escorting of visitors
• Controlling traffic
• Checking identity
• Reporting on breaches of security or defects
• Dealing with demonstrators and intruders
• Safeguarding classified information and material
• Liaising with emergency services and invoking emergency procedures
• Operating and monitoring security systems; CCTV and alarms etc
• Reporting safety hazards and accidents
• Carrying out, if required, initial action at the scene of any incident

Applying for this role will mean you will be required to attend a medical appointment to undertake a colour perception eye test.

Post Locations

The permanent duty station or main base will be Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) Ashchurch. You may, however be required to undertake other duties at alternative sites within a reasonable distance of your home should there be an operational need.

Travel Requirements

Alongside your normal patrolling duties that will encompass Ashchurch there may be on occasion where you may need to travel to other sites to meet the needs of the Business, however, any taskings of this kind would be carried out in a MOD Vehicle.

A Full UK driving Licence will be essential for this role as you will be required to make trips to the local vets and the Defence Animal Centre as well as carrying out Mobile Patrols.

Agreed. 18 grand is a bloody poor show. More public sector shame.

Nonetheless, this might just be the lifeline a former soldier or young person needs. £18,000 and job security is a lot more attractive to some than it is to others.

Incidentally I read a recent study ( The sky sports subscription in the mess has ran out) that indicated, while rewards and incentives are often effective for maintaining morale and attracting staff, simply handing out lumps of cash is not an effective way of increasing staff efforts.

Besides- at the very least it might give more insight & more knowledge in becoming a dog handler elsewhere.
Ok if you already have a pension and house
